I have just finished reading The Long Song – Andrea Levy, short listed for the Man Booker Prize 2010.
An interesting story beautifully told, full of humour, passion, pathos and human frailty about the lives of slaves during the last years of slavery on Jamaica. The story is told by the main character, July, in the form of a Memoir which her son, a printer has encouraged her to tell so he can print it for her, bound and “with sugarcane on the cover”. The climax of the novel is the 10 day Baptist War in which the slaves revolted with dire consequences for some. The change in their status has a direct impact on July and her life.
I have not read A Small Island (Winner of the Orange Prize), but after having enjoyed this book will certainly be on the lookout for a copy.
P.S. My book had the “sugarcane” cover, which is pertinent to the story but I much prefer the UK cover.
