Often after reading a particularly wonderful, engrossing book you are left with a residual image that never fades. Sometimes you will come across photograph that embodies everything the book evoked in you. This is one such photograph.
The book it reminds me of is ‘Ahabs Wife’ by Sena Jeter Naslund. The story was inspired by a passage in Herman Melville’s ‘Moby Dick’.
It is a vast, compelling story of a woman whose life is dominated by the sea. Una Spenser our heroine, spends a quiet childhood in Kentucky with an overzealous religious father, serene years in a secluded island lighthouse, time spent disguised as a cabin boy on a whaling ship, years of fiery romances and encounters with legendary historical figures. With astounding courage, Una blazes a trail to her future, along the way she encounters disasters, adventure, loss, murder and madness before meeting her match – Captain Ahab.
The writing is beautiful and although it is not a quick easy read it is one I would highly recommend.
