Spirit Lifter

It is that time of year down here on the East Coast of South Africa, weeks of gloomy dark days of endless drizzle. We need the rain having come out of a rather nasty period of El Niño, but one begins to long for the sun and colour.

Nothing like an overload of pink to lift the spirits.

Quietly Slipping back….

I have neglected my beloved blog for way too long, so, today I have a few minutes spare so am committing myself to making  few spare minutes at least twice a week to share some of  the amazing things one can find on this treasure trove called the internet.

During the course of my day, while doing research for the pages I manage I find the most beautiful, astounding, glorious, happy, thoughtful, I could go on forever, “things”, so it is not for lack of material that I have not been sharing my findings and thoughts, but bad time management!

No more. Instead of a New Years resolution, I am making an almost the end of the year resolution.

And what better way to start the regeneration of my blog, but, with the beautiful aerial photographs of Loess Heerink

Fascinated by the colorful arrangements of flowers and fruits strapped to the bikes of street vendors in Vietnam, photographer Loes Heerink began climbing onto different bridges around Hanoi to capture these pops of color on the streets. Heerink loved that each of the vendors creates a new piece of art everyday, and that the collection of goods they bring into town differs each morning. This act prompted the series “Vendors from Above,” a collection of these street vendor photographs she shot while living in Vietnam.

In order to commemorate these workers, who are often female migrants, Heerink is hoping to expand the project to create a photobook through her new Kickstarter campaign which will bring her back to Vietnam. You can see more series from the now Netherlands-based photographer on her website and Instagram. (via thisiscolossal.com)

I am back…………

 Gwynn G12 #3 392

Well, I am back, open roads, endless plains and huge skies all left behind.

But not for long…… off again early on Friday for an Easter Weekend jaunt to a lovely place called Umlalazi, which is an Ezemvelo (ex Natal Parks Board) Nature Reserve near Mtunzini on the KwaZuluNatal coast.

So excited as I have never been there and you are reportedly able to see Palmnut Vultures, one of the rarest bird’s of prey in South Africa. They live in the Rafia Palm Forest.

………..Road Tripping…………

DSCF1944In the words of one of my favourite driving songs…”we’re on the road again”…off to a family wedding in Cape Town, so, why not do a little Karoo wander while we’re about it……off at the crack of dawn tomorrow for exploring and adventuring.

Have an exciting weekend.

One fish, two fish………

24949011980_3e97784fee_cFriday night is usually Burger and Movie night, but while I was out grocery shopping I went into Bartho’s Fish Co. (a not so local for me, Fresh Fish store) on the off chance that they might have some Tuna.

And there they were Gorgeous Fresh Tuna Steaks just crying out to be seared and become my dinner.

I usually marinade my Tuna for about 10 minutes in a mixture of  a 1/4 cup of soy sauce, about a Tablespoon of mirin, the same of honey and rice wine vinegar, a splash or two of sesame oil and then some sesame seeds to coat the steaks with, I like to use some black and some white.

Then I  serve it with a small salad, wasabied sweet potato mash and some pickled ginger

But not tonight, I felt like something a little different, perhaps just searing the tuna and then serving with a delicious salad and a mayonnaise of some sort. And, that is how I happened on my new favourite food blog……Tasty Yummies.

Being a off and on follower of the dreaded Banting diet and having a Gluten intolerant daughter I need to be creative with a limited pantry.  Beth has created such a inspiring blog with such delicious recipes. So, tonight it is –

Seared Tuna with Wasabi Citrus Aioli

Do go onto Beth’s blog, so many delicious recipes for those of us who either have a Gluten problem or just need to avoid Carbohydrates.

Monday Morning Musings

This Monday I am really in a musing sort of mood.

I cannot believe that it was a year ago that I celebrated my birthday with a Hot Air Balloon ride in Cappad0cia.

Gwynn G12 189So much has been packed into the intervening year.

We have been away, camping on a farm in a field full of calves, exploring the wonders of the far north reaches of our province, exploring the wonders of our mountains and then just painting and chilling and moving the youngest up to Johannesburg to start on a new career path…………………………….

This was 5 months and 4 days ago and I cannot believe that I did not complete this post and that I have not touched my blog since then.

Oh, I have a book full of really good excuses, but am not going to even offer one.

I do so love sharing all the wonders that surround us and then to have people enjoy my sharing and observations. But, truth be told it is an absolute indulgence to  trawl the internet, cruise round the country and places afar, cook and bake and read and paint and print and garden and then to share with everyone and no-one.

So, I am going to pick up where I left off and let’s see if I am up to the challenge.
